Getting Started - Define Objectives and Requirements

The steps outlined here will give you an idea of how to get started on your website. You will not be alone, during this process, as we will work with you to develop the requirements to meet your unique objectives. Click on the "Click Here for Estimate" button for a detailed checklist that will walk you through the requirements.

Objective

The first step is to define the objectives of the website (eg, create a storefront for online sales, distribute or collect information, provide background and contact information for your business,...). An important part of this step is the definition of the site name and web address (eg, www.mystore.com). After the objectives are developed, you can begin to think about the features, functions, and site structure.

Features and Functions

Some of the common features and functions that you will want to consider are:

Introduction (home page)
About us
Contact information
Mission statement
Directions to business
Links to other sites
Help or FAQ
Calendar
Newsletter
Registration
Feedback form
Guest book
Product catalog
Shopping cart
Credit card form
Photo album
Discussion forum (blog)

Maintenance Plan

Some websites require updating to maintain current information. Here, you decide whether your site will be maintained by you or by a professional service. If you will be performing some of the site updates, maintenance features can built in to simplify this function.

Site Structure and Layout

Here you decide how you want the site to look and how users will navigate through your pages.

If you don't already have a design in mind, a good way to begin this is to visit other sites on the web and note the features of their layout and color scheme that you would like to include.
